Waters ACQUITY UPLC with PDA detector and Column Manager, refurbished

A four-module ACQUITY stack built for method development: binary pump, cooled sample manager, a Column Manager that switches between columns, and a photodiode array detector. The photograph is the actual unit. The PDA is the reason to choose this system over a single-wavelength one. It records the full spectrum from 190 to 500 nm across every peak, so you can choose the wavelength after the run, check peak purity, and compare a peak's spectrum against a reference standard. Peak purity is the usual way to show specificity in a stability-indicating method. Two things to know for spectral work. Keep the peak below 1 AU, because above that the photometric error changes the shape of the spectrum, and Waters says so in its PDA guide. And compare spectra taken at the same mobile phase composition, because pH and solvent change the spectrum too. The Column Manager holds two columns up to 150 mm, or four up to 50 mm, so you can screen columns without re-plumbing. Like any UPLC, it will run your HPLC methods only after checking. The system volume is much smaller, so a gradient method elutes earlier, and moving to smaller particle columns is a change you have to justify under USP <621>. The pump is binary, so methods that mix three or four solvents are out. Tell us what you need to run and we will tell you whether this fits.

Waters ACQUITY UPLC with TUV detector, refurbished

A three-module ACQUITY set up for routine assay work: binary pump, cooled sample manager with a column heater, and a dual wavelength TUV detector, running under Empower on the PC shown. The photographs are the actual system, filmed running replicate caffeine injections with 0.2% RSD on peak area. For a QC lab that knows its wavelength, a TUV gives you nothing to maintain that you do not need. If you want peak purity or spectral identification, you want a PDA instead. Like any UPLC it will run HPLC methods only after checking, because the small system volume shifts gradient retention, and the pump is binary, so methods needing three or four solvents are out. Two LC-10ADvp pumps, an SCL-10Avp controller and a DGU-14A degasser: the pumping half of a binary Shimadzu HPLC. There is no detector or autosampler in this stack. It suits a lab that runs older Shimadzu systems and wants a complete spare set, or someone building a simple binary system. The pumps can also be sold separately. On a used GC the price depends on what is fitted, so before we quote we check the inlet types, the detector, and whether the oven and pneumatics come up to setpoint, and we write that into the quote. The HP 5890 Series II is the GC a lot of chemists learned on, and many are still running. This one has two inlets with manual pneumatics, which means no electronic pressure control and very little to go wrong. It suits a teaching lab, a simple FID method, or a lab that wants a spare body. The photograph is the actual unit. Before we quote we check the detectors fitted and whether the oven heats and holds temperature. If it has an ECD, that detector contains a radioactive source and cannot be sold without the right licence, so we will tell you if that applies.

Questions about buying an instrument

What should I check before buying a used LC-MS, HPLC or GC?

On a used system the question is history: what it actually comes with (the front end, the autosampler, the detectors), the software and whether the licence transfers, the condition of the source and flow path and how the system was shut down and stored, and what the PM record shows. We check these before we quote and write the answers into the quote.

What matters when buying a new instrument?

On a new instrument there is no history to check, so it comes down to specification, warranty, and who supports the instrument once it is on your bench.

Are the photographs the actual units?

On used and refurbished listings held in the Greater Toronto Area, yes. Where a listing shows a diagram, or says the photo shows a typical unit, you get photographs of the actual unit when it is quoted.

Can you source an instrument that is not listed?

Yes. Tell us the modules you need and the analyte you run, and we will come back with specific units, the configuration, the history where it applies, and the price.

Is there a warranty, installation and service?

The warranty is written into every quote. Installation, a service contract and parts are available for anything bought from Chromkit, through our service partner in the Greater Toronto Area.

Will a GC autosampler work with my GC and software?

Compatibility is the whole question on a sampler. Tell us the GC model and the software that controls it, and we confirm in writing that the sampler controls your GC and works with your software before quoting.

What if the instrument is not right for my application?

We say so before you spend the money. Sensitivity and configuration are checked against the analyte you actually need to run.
