    Send the symptom

    Low recovery, peak fronting, drifting baseline, lost sensitivity, a flash run that will not resolve. Tell me the compound, the matrix, how you extract it and the system. A photo of the chromatogram or the TLC plate helps more than a paragraph.

    Get the diagnosis

    I tell you the two or three places I would look first, and what to check before spending anything. Usually the same working day.

    Order the part, if you need one

    If a part is genuinely the answer, I source it and quote it. If your current column is fine, that is the answer you get.

Detector lamps and light sources

Deuterium lamp for Waters 2489 and 2998 detectors

Aftermarket deuterium lamp for the Waters 2489 and 2998, cross-referenced to 201000281. The 2489 runs at set wavelengths and the 2998 reads the full spectrum, and the same lamp serves both. On either detector, deuterium output falls fastest in the deep UV, so a method running at 210 nm loses sensitivity long before one running at 254 nm does. This detector expects a lamp carrying an RFID tag. The chip is listed in the specification above, and it is worth confirming before you order, because a chipless lamp can be refused by the instrument.

Pump and injector spares

PerformancePLUS check valve cartridge for Waters 2695

Check valve cartridge for the Waters 2695 Alliance, cross-referenced to 700000254. A check valve that is not seating gives you a pressure trace that swings with the pump stroke, and the free test is worth running first: sonicate the cartridge in isopropanol and refit it. A valve held open by a particle or by precipitated buffer often recovers, and one that is genuinely worn does not. That five minute check separates the two and costs nothing.

Spectrophotometer and AAS lamps

Deuterium lamp for Shimadzu UV-Vis spectrophotometers

Deuterium lamp for the Shimadzu UV-Vis bench, cross-referenced to 062-65055-05. These are double beam instruments, which hides lamp ageing for longer than a single beam does: the reference beam absorbs some of the drift, so by the time the baseline looks wrong the lamp is usually well past its useful output. The tell is noise creeping up below 250 nm while the visible range still looks clean. Run the instrument's own energy or lamp history check before ordering, and if the noise covers the whole scan the lamp is not your problem.

SiliaPrepX SPE Cartridges, Polymer-Based, HLB

A water wettable polymer, so the bed does not dewet if the cartridge runs dry. That is the commonest reason a silica C18 extraction loses recovery halfway through a batch, and it is the single practical argument for a polymeric sorbent. HLB retains acids, bases and neutrals together, so it is the first choice when you are screening or when the analyte list is mixed. That breadth is also its limit. It holds matrix as readily as it holds analyte, so if you are fighting ion suppression in LC-MS, an ion exchange or mixed mode sorbent will give you a cleaner extract than this one.

CE-SDS gel buffer

Gel buffer for CE-SDS, cross-referenced to A30341. This is a consumable the assay is validated around rather than one you pick on chromatographic grounds, so the lot and the storage matter more than the price. Sieving performance falls as the gel ages, and a batch stored warm or held too long shows up as migration times that creep and resolution that goes first between the low molecular weight markers. Check the expiry and the storage condition on arrival, and confirm the vial format against your tray before ordering.

Reversed phase flash on 40 to 63 micron silica, for compounds too polar to separate on bare silica in a normal phase system. It is the flash equivalent of the C18 SPE cartridge and it lets you purify in water and acetonitrile rather than hexane and ethyl acetate, which also makes the fractions easier to hand straight to an LC-MS check. Confirm your flash system can run aqueous mobile phase and that the cartridge fitting matches before ordering.

USP L1, and that is the line that matters in a QC lab. A compendial monograph names the packing by L code rather than by brand, so an L1 column of the right dimensions is a legitimate substitution. That gets you in the door. System suitability decides whether it actually runs, because two L1 columns can separate quite differently. Beyond the code, it is built to hold hydrophilic compounds that elute at the solvent front on an ordinary C18, because it takes 100 percent aqueous without the phase collapse. Spherical silica, 99.999 percent pure at 100 Å, so trace metal will not tail your phosphates. Endcapped. One limit: 4.6 mm only, at 3 and 5 micron.
